About SCCA

The SCCA is a non-political association, founded by a group of citizens who are concerned about the Shermans Creek Watershed.  These residents became alarmed when news was heard that a gas-fired, electric generation plant was to be built along Shermans Creek in Carroll Twp. Many members of the group live along the creek and were concerned about the negative effects the plant would have on the creek, it's wildlife and our environment.

The SCCA is dedicated to protecting the creek and in providing environmental education to the surrounding areas.

This coming year, the group plans to organize numerous community programs, provide interesting speakers on environmentally related subjects and many other fun projects for families and children.

 SCCA BEGINNINGS

In the fall of 1998, a group of concerned residents joined together to form an organization of residents who opposed the plans of one of the current Carroll Township Supervisors to have a gas-fired electric generation facility built on his property which was zoned Agriculture/Residental. This organization was originally lead by Jack Rokavic as chair, Josh Wilson, Sandy Belcastro, Peach Wilson, Linda Sieber, Jeff Schmidt, Gail Zeigler, Gerry Bergan and Lee Waddell as Directors.

Directors and Members collected over 18,000 signatures, the majority from Carroll Twp, but also from other surrounding communities.  These were presented to the Carroll Twp, 3-Man, Board of Supervisors. Many of the residents were afraid to sign petitions, and others had the opinion that anything the group would do would ever have any affect on two of the current Supervisors Power over the community.  They actually thought our effort was doomed. After many exhausting group meetings and personal efforts, long and late Zoning Hearing Board Meetings, The Stone and Webster Corporation withdrew their application and plans to continue with the plant.

This all came about from the help and advice from Attorneys Thomas Alan Lindsey and Peter Meadows Adells.
Once the long, hard battle with Stone & Webster Corporation had ended, the SCCA continued on with efforts to have the Carroll Twp. Zoning Ordinances Revised in an effort to protect the community from uncontrolled, unplanned, over-development.

With the environmental and legal expertise of Peter Meadows Adells, SCCA Members presented what they thought were appropriate guidelines with which Local Officials chose to rely upon to help revise the new zoning ordinances.
Today, the SCCA has been attending Township Meetings, sponsoring watershed monitoring and cleanups, and has been avidly working to promote environmental awareness within the entire Shermans Creek Watershed.
The SCCA's  main concern is the quality of life and the healthy economic development of this area..  We hope to maintain a natural environment, yet provide for the inevitable development of this rural area.
